Big D at the Movies: Wrath Of The Titans.

Demigod and reluctant hero Perseus is now living a quiet life as a fisherman when  Zeus reappears, asking for help. With humanity no longer praying to the gods their powers are fading and this means the creatures imprisoned in Tartarus are liable to break free.
Perseus politely declines, more interested in raising his own son Helios. Zeus goes "Oh well." and goes off to enlist other assistance , namely resentful brother Hades and surly wargod Ares. With both of these pissed off with Zeus, this ends about as well as you'd expect.
With monsters now loose on the face of the earth Perseus now has a new mission: Rescue Zeus from Tartarus and stop ancient monstrosity Chronos from escaping into the earthly realm.

The remake of "Clash..." was Ok but could have been better and unfortunately "Wrath..." is much the same.
The effects and visuals are impressive. Tartarus is a spectacular place of Lava and dusty rocks and the assorted beasties are done well. There's still that annoying tendency to shoot action sequences so you can barely see what's going on but it is a bit more reined in this time and the scene with the.. what the hell is the multiple of cyclops anyway? Cyclops? Cyclopses? Cyclopedes? Anyway, some of those show up at one point and a halfway decent punchup ensues.
Sticking with the positives, Liam Neeson (Zeus) is as dependable as always and he and Ralph Fiennes (Hades)  manage to make their roles - gods who know their day is passing - surprisingly sympathetic.
Thankfully Perseus himself is a lot more likeable this time around and even gets in a few quips. New boy Agenor gets slightly more and although he occasionally seems to be channeling Russell Brand, makes the transition from rogue to hero without too much of a leap.
Love interest Io is killed off before the pic starts and I'm not sure  how I feel about that. Io was a tad bland last time around but you get the feeling she was bumped aside because the writers weren't sure how to use her. The returning Andromeda moves into her slot and she is at least given something to do besides give advice and look decorative.
On the subject of odd casting: If Bill Nighy's Hephaestus was any more Northern he's be putting gravy on his chips and wearing a flat cap. Entertaining but baffling.
As you can see, there's plenty about  "Wrath of The Titans" that's done well or at least competently.
So how come I didn't enjoy it more?
I mean, it was OK but I expect to come out of an action movie thinking "Wow" and I didn't. I couldn't get immersed into this film and I honestly don't know why.
Wrath of the Titans  - not a bad way to kill a couple of hours, I suppose.
That's not exactly a ringing endorsement is it?

  1. I feel you have been kind to Clash... I thought it was one of the worst movies I have ever seen, such a massive let down
