Wrestling Revue October 1971

I dusted off my scanner at the weekend. ( Literally. Anybody know why computer desks attract so much frigging dust? ) and scanned some of the more interesting pics in the October 1971 issue of Wrestling Revue. Hope you like them. 

The lead article is a match between Dory Funk Jr and Jack Brisco.

I'm struggling to think what the 2015 equivalent would be. 

Even if you could get two babyfaces in the ring, somebody would end up getting twatted with a chair.  

Keeping it in the family, here's Dory Sr and a fresh-faced Terry Funk  ready to rumble.

Working with your dad is always going to be a weird experience. 

If you're both wrestlers, even more so.

This is the sort of thing I always find fascinating in these old magazines - the guys I've never heard of.

Were they big stars in the day who just got forgotten about or a pair of mid-carders who got a moment in the sun.

 Is there a family scrapbook somewhere in Mississippi where this pic is proudly kept for the grandchildren to marvel at?

I guess I will never find out.

Then as now, magazines played a big part in introducing new talent. 

  Cynic that I am, I'm thinking he was more likely to be half not-Indian and half also-not-Indian. 

Muddying the waters a bit, there seems to have been at least 3 Suni/Sunny War Clouds over the years.

Maybe the name got passed down, like The Phantom. Or Zorro.

And this time it's British wrestling queen Mitzi Mueller.

  You can see why the UK fans took a shine to her, can't you?

I'm not too sure about that outfit though. Ugh. 

The big bloke is "460 pound Man Mountain Klondyke Bill" it says here.  

Those eyebrows terrify me too.
I don't blame Lou for trying to leg it.

 Football player-turned grappler "Handsome" Jimmy Valiant does the matinee idol bit.

I can't really argue about the name - he was a good-looking chap back in the day.

Then he got a really bad case of  Scary Beard. 

He may still be wrestling...

More ladies, more horrible outfits as Betty Ncicolli battles Patty O'Hara..

We want old-lady swimsuits and we want them baggy. 

Finally, a couple of hard-nuts who had been menacing British rings.
