Heavy Metal Cover Girls: Gorgons

Evening All.

For tonight's short & sweet post I'm sticking with Heavy Metal Cover Girls who are dangerous to know, although in this case the danger occurs the moment you meet their gaze.

Considering that the Gorgon is one of the most iconic monsters in Western culture, I'm surprised I don't have more of these. However I do have just enough to prove that cover artists can take the same basic premise and come up with very different results.

Now let's get ready to meet tonight's guests. Just this once I'll be OK if you don't make eye contact.

Meduza - Now And Forever (Sweden 2002)

heavy metal cover girls Medusa

The Classical Medusa was very definitely a monster - extra animal bits and all.  Modern interpretations tend to just focus on the snakey barnet and the unfortunate tendency to petrify passing mortals. Modern writers are also more likely to make Medusa sympathetic. This cover has a bit from column A and a bit from column B. Still a monster but the expression on her face is more thoughtful than triumphant.
Possibly even shades of "Who keeps leaving these bloody statues here? I swear I keep hearing the doorbell but when I pop outside there's no bugger there."

Meduza are Euro Power Metal in that Rising Force sorta style, right down to the leads.

Storm - Medusa (USA 2016)

Metal album gorgon

The word "Dichotomy" comes to mind.
I wish I knew what it meant.

It was a pleasant surprise to discover this is a concept album based on a rather tragic character  and the band go all out for the live shows.

Koru - Medusa (2010)

Metal album cover Gorgon

Satyrs are very stupid. How else would you explain this muppet accosting a woman with snakes on her head?
Who the bloody hell did you think it was mate? It's not like the Gorgon's aren't famous or anything/
I love the causal way she's all "Oh fuck off, Goatboy."

Just had a thought. How come you never hear about the two other Gorgons?
Medusa gets all the press, after all.

Koru don't have any music on Youtube so here's their Last FM site.

Raging Dead - When The Night Falls (Italy 2017)

Hey, maybe this is one of Medusa's sisters trying to get some attention?
Problem is, anybody who meets her is going to die before they find out her name so folks are just going to think it was Medusa anyway.

Raging Dead describe themselves as Horror-Punk but I can see a lot of metalheads digging this

Snakebite - Princess Of Pain (Germany 2015)

Ah, so that's where the third sister went to.
She worked out that if she doesn't look people in the eye then they don't get all stone-y.
Clever girl.
Once humans invented wigs and sunglasses she could get out and party.

Snakebite play that 80s-era singalong Hard Rock.

So there you have it.
5 different bands,
5 very different covers.
Lots and lots of snakes.

Let me know what, if anything,  you liked and if there's a theme you want to see then stick it n the comments too.

That's all folks.
