Film Review: Monster From Bikini Beach (2008)

Genre: Creature Feature.

While a corrupt cop tries to track down a massive haul, a strange creature is devouring women in bikinis.  But will either of these things interfere with the big Go-Go-Dancing Contest?

See!  A beach movie that doesn't let being miles away from the sea slow it down!

See! A woman wrestling with a fish!

See!  A paper-mache monster that looks like the world's shittest High School football mascot!

See!  Boobs!
See!  Blood!
See! Boobs covered in Blood which is totally not my thing and disturbs me slightly.

See! Some appalling acting! Then some more appalling acting. Face it, everybody in this is a terrible actor.
See! Lots and lots of Go-Go dancing.  I didn't know that was still a thing.

"Monster From Bikini Beach" is a low-budget homage to the Creature Features and Beach Movies with a bit of hard-boiled thrown in.  Although I've seen it listed as a comedy, there are no real gags, the idea being to laugh at the movie itself.

I think. It's hard to tell, sometimes.

Then again when you have dialogue like this:

 And
... then the writers are probably doing it deliberately.

Stop! Go-Go dance time.

It's no exaggeration to say that the producers shoehorned in GoGo dancing at every possible opportunity.
You get used to it.

What I didn't get used to was, unfortunately, one of the main plot points as bent detective Sammy limps around town browbeating people in search of the Big Drugs Stash that's come in. Personally I found this sucked the energy out of the film every time it cropped up. It also reinforces my sneaking suspicion that somebody welded two separate film ideas together because the tone shifts so much.

Stop! GoGo time!
Sorry. I meant "Time for an unexplained shot of a giant penis helmet."

I rather wish that the director had thrown away those pages and just concentrated on the monster and the gogo dancing.   In a film called Monster From Bikini Beach what would you rather see?

This?

Or this:
and this?

You even get this as a bonus.

For all it's flaws I did enjoy Monster from Bikini Beach. I had to switch off a few braincells and reprogram my critical facilities first, mind you. Once I'd done that I was able to go along with the daftness of it all.

If you like low, low-fi creature features, really like GoGo dancing and can cope with hearing the same Surf Music tune over and over again  then you may like this.

That's All Folks.
