Weird Crushes: Judge Anderson

"The minimum for using a debit card is £8." said the young lady behind the counter at the charity bookshop.
I contemplated the pile of books I'd just dropped on the counter. By my estimate there was approximately £7 there.
It had taken twenty minutes of umming and ahhing as well as three full circuits of the shop to select this lot. I wasn't entirely sure I wanted to go through the process again. If I wasn't careful, I'd end up with twenty quids worth of books and payday two weeks away.
I looked idly around the shop and my eyes lit on a basket of elderly comics. "That'll work." I murmured and began riffling through them.
As it happens, I found one I wanted almost immediately.

Best of 2000ad Monthly 60

2000AD introduced me to a lot of great female characters - Durham Red,  Maze Dumoir,  Medb, Nest Of The Speckled Face - but I was a massive fan of  Cassandra Anderson right from her very first appearance in Judge Dredd.
The blonde Psi-Judge always seemed a lot more human than Dredd, with a definite sense of humour, but still held up her own end when it came to ass-kicking and this might explain why Cassie became such a fan-favourite.
Well that, and being female and pretty in a British boys comic. This was quite a rare thing in the early 80s. You couldn't help noticing that her uniform seemed to be a bit more ...snug... than Dredd's. Heady stuff to a 13 year old.
To the best of my knowledge, Judge Anderson is the only character ever to get a topless pinup in a British comic.

As the years went by I gradually drifted away from 2000AD but the issue above sent me on a trip down memory lane and I thought I'd share a few scans with you.

Cassie gets ready to lay down the law.

See what I mean about the uniform?
Sensible boots, though.

She is the Law
A delightful pinup from the centre of the issue I bought.

While I'm here, let's have some more pics.
Glenn Fabry Judge Anderson
Remember, this young lady faced down Judge Death - a villain that would make The Joker shit himself - and kicked his ass. Twice.

2000AD prog 521 cover
A cover I found on the 2000ad Cover Archive.  and one of my all-time favourites.
Anderson is down, hurt - but very definitely not out.

My inner 13 year old has just had a quiet word with me. He seems to think I should get some Judge Anderson TPBs next time I'm in Forbidden Planet. I think he's right.

Before I go I will leave you with this. I had a dig about in an old briefcase and it turns out that I've got the topless pinup. If I ever work out how to scan an A3 pic with an A4 scanner, I'll post it.

 That's all folks.

  1. Take a photo of the pinup and post that, our thirteen year old selves will be very grateful.

    1. Well, I've now got it up on my wall so that might be an option...

  2. Being on the nether side of 50, I'm a complete stranger to this comic book world. I wonder if I were born later if it would've attracted me.

    1. Could well have happened. The character was always fun and definitely not just for eye-candy.

    1. I never understood the enormous shoulderpads though. Wouldn't they get in the way?
