(Although you frequently do get album covers starring pretty girls that just happen to be demons, vikings or running amok with a chainsaw. And I've posted enough of them to prove it )
Today's post is going to feature a slightly different approach to the Cover Girl, courtesy of a nation that has their own unique take on graphic design.
In Japan Manga/Anime is a big, big thing. Naturally some of that bleeds into album covers as well.
You know, 2 years ago I'd never have believed that the words "Cute" and "Metal" would ever appear in the same sentence. Then Babymetal happened. Japan really is a strange place...
Alieson - World's End (2009)
She's a vampire, isn't she?
I just get this "Cute - but lethal vibe of her."
I think it's the Gothic Lolita outfit.
That and the glowing red eyes.
I think I may have fun tracking down sound clips for all of these.
Sound Holic - Metallic Vampire (2011)
A little bit of research online reveals that Sound Holic are a "Musical Doujinshi" (Doujinshi are fan-made manga/fanzines dedicated to certain series.) and as far as I can tell, specialise in new arrangements of soundtracks. I didn't even know that was a thing.
Aargh. Not a cute vampire! Not a cute vampire! Please don't eat my face!
I rather like this track.
I rather like this track.
Iron Attack - Devil's Daughter (2008)
Iron Attack - Far East Judgement (2009)
In my music folder I have an Iron Attack track where a bunch of squeaky-voiced Lolis suddenly launch into the chorus to Helloween's "Heavy Metal is The Law" and I damn near fell off my chair laughing.
Found it! Fast forward to 4.57 for the oddness.
Eternal Excaliver - Eternal Battleship (2015)
After looking at the above album cover, I guarantee the band themselves will come as a surprise.
Dragon Guardian - 聖魔剣ヴァルキュリアス (2011)
I wonder if there's a manga adaptation of this anywhere? If there isn't, there ought to be.
And finally, something a lot closer to what I normally post.
Kissing The Mirror - Fatal Scythe's Awakening (2009)
Talk about mixed messages. "Weeee Boobs!" and "Run ya daft bugger" would be having a fistfight inside your head.Another "Doujinshi" band apparently. This is an instrumental
I've always found most of these anime baby-sluts rather disturbing and, having seen a documentary about some of the peculiar adult Japanese fans recently, my opinion hasn't changed much, it's a weird subculture.
ReplyDeleteYeah...there's always that guy that takes it jsut a little too far, isn't there?
ReplyDeleteMan that's a weird Japanese sub-culture. They somehow manage to make Heavy Metal into a lolita-like experience.......only in Japan!
