I find metal/rock album covers which have beautiful women on them.
I post them, grouped under an arbitrarily chosen theme.
I also post a music vid for the band if there is one.
I try to find something clever and witty to say about each one.
You go "Oh cool" and hopefully listen to the music sample as well.
Easy, hey?
Now you might think that I would quickly run out of themes but as it turned out, that's not the case. I've been doing this for a few years now and I have enough material in my folder to keep me going for another dozen or so posts - and that's if I don't repeat myself.
Today's selection all have a very simple theme; Doorways. Or if you want to use a more dramatic term "Portals"
One of the things I keep seeing is that if one artist uses a symbol, so will a dozen others. In the case of doorways Portals it's a nice visual shorthand to establish that the character is on the brink of something momentous.
Does she go through and face what's on the other side? Does she stay here and deal with normal life?
Is she running away from something or running to something?
Is she hanging around waiting for somebody else to show up?
All questions that the artist might want us to ask - or he might just love drawing really cool gateways.
As early 80s pomp legends Zebra so memorably put it "What's Behind The Door?"
Sunstorm - Edge of Tomorrow (Italy/USA 2016)
Technically this might actually be a window but it's a very Sci-Fi window that looks like a Stargate so I've decreed it to be a Portal .
I am Big D and this is my will.
The other thing you will notice throughout this post is that the women contemplating these gateways are all quite elegantly dressed.
I'm not quite sure why this young lady has six feet of silk trailing from her armpit but I've never understood womens' fashion anyway. Yeti boots for instance - what the hell is that all about?
Sunstorm are a melodic rock combo that features the ever-classy Joe Lynn Turner.
Guarnerius - Arcanos Abismus (Mexico 2003)
You're holding the violin upside down, love.
Also, if I were going through that scary-ass portal (and if anything's a portal, that's a portal)
I would want something more than the gift of music on my side.
Guarnerius are European-sounding Power Metal
Emir Hot - Sevdah Metal (Bosnia/Herzegovina 2008)
A doorway that was already creepy even before I noticed the guy with the scythe standing on the left hand side.
You can just hear her thinking "Oh Hell No!" can't you?
I suspect she's also thinking "Next time Mum suggests a visit to Auntie Lucretia, I'm hiding in the attic."
Emir Hot is built around Balkan guitar wizard Emir Hot and play Prog-Metal
Let's get even creepier.
Kaiserreich - Cuore Nero (Italy 2015)
Whatever is on the other side, our young lady is not looking forward to it.
She is also currently wishing she had a nice warm cardigan right now, and bugger what the ancient rites say.
The logo should tell you what this band sound like.
It certainly doesn't tell you what they're called...
I could feel myself getting colder as that track was playing. Weird.
Another one that is unlikely to end well.
Then we'll have some cake!"
But somehow I doubt it.
Devilment have a lead singer who looks familiar.
Please can we have something a bit less Gothic for the next album cover?
Oooo-kay.
Not creepy but I don't really know what the hell is going on here.
The artist taking the album title quite literally, methinks.
To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Athena are Power/Prog metal.

Devilment - The Great And Secret Show (UK 2014)
I'm hoping the ghostly presences on the other side are saying "Quick - step through and we'll protect you from the nutter with the bowie knife. Then we'll have some cake!"
But somehow I doubt it.

Let's finish with one that should have a happy ending.
Find Me- Wings of Love (USA/Sweden/Italy 2013)
A cover that initially made me ask "How exactly does the album cover match up with the album title?."
It's not immediately obvious but trust me, it is there.
I'm hoping that when our heroine steps through, she'll find true love waiting for her.
She does look hopeful, doesn't she?
But if it's just another dating chatline, somebody is getting a rosestem up the nose.
Fittingly, Find Me are pure AOR. - a genre that lives and dies for romance.
That's all folks.
Hi Big D, awesome covers. I like the “doorways” theme, it lends itself to mystery. Visually, Sunstorm is my favorite cover in this group. And yes she is looking out a portal, very Sci-Fi. Good music too. My second fav cover here is Emir Hot, it’s so perfectly creepy! I always love your entertaining comments on these covers. :)
ReplyDeleteCheers Lil. Glad you liked them.
DeleteVery interesting blog. A lot of blogs I see these days don't really provide anything that attract others, but I'm most definitely interested in this one. Just thought that I would post and let you know.
ReplyDeleteYou are really on to something here Dale! Great work. The first one reminds me of a James Bond theme.
ReplyDeleteIt's a vast improvement on the last few James Bond themesongs, that's for sure.
DeleteI rather like the Kaiser Reich video, nicely shot.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed a lot of bands doing "lyric videos" lately. Some of them are half-hearted but the better vids definitely add to the song.
DeleteGlad you liked it.
An interesting collection. The last one felt familiar, like comfort food.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you want something that makes you feel good. That applies to music as well as everything else.
